What you can expect

  • The experience begins at Normafa, where you enter the grounds of the Svábhegy Observatory, home to Hungary’s leading astronomical research institute. First, you take a guided walk through the observatory’s historic park, surrounded by ancient trees and heritage buildings, while learning about the site’s romantic history and the cutting-edge research conducted here today.

Next, you arrive at the Budapest Dome, where you explore the observatory’s largest telescopes and discover historical observation instruments, alongside stories about the scientists who work with them. The programme continues with a live solar observation using a large telescope, where you can safely study the Sun in detail, including sunspots, solar flares, and prominences.

In the final part of the visit, you move to the lecture hall to explore meteorites. You learn what shooting stars really are, where meteorites come from, and how the Solar System formed. Under microscopes, you examine colourful crystal structures inside different meteorite types, before having the rare opportunity to hold real meteorites—ancient fragments of space that can be billions of years old.
