Your artistic adventure begins at Obuse Station, where your guide will greet you and lead a gentle walk through the charming streets of Obuse. As you stroll past Edo-style architecture, you'll get a feel for the town that inspired one of Japan’s greatest artists.
First, you’ll visit Matsubaya Sake Brewery, a local producer known for its deep roots and small-batch brewing. Here, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the brewing process followed by a sake tasting that introduces you to the flavours of the region.
Next, step into the world of Japan’s iconic artist Katsushika Hokusai at the Hokusai-kan Museum. View original works and rare sketches from the master’s later years, many created during his stays in Obuse. Learn how this quiet town became a vital part of Hokusai’s final creative chapter.
The tour then takes a hands-on turn with a Paint & Sip session at Garari, a beautiful local space designed for creativity and community. You’ll sip sake from the brewery you visited (or a non-alcoholic alternative) and, with gentle guidance, paint your own version of The Great Wave or another Hokusai-inspired design. No experience needed; just a sense of fun and curiosity!
The experience concludes back at Obuse Station, leaving you with your own art piece, a sake glow, and a deeper connection to Hokusai’s Obuse.
