What you can expect

This Segway Tour leads through the Parc de la Ciutadella and to the Port Olímpic, the sports harbour that was constructed for the 1992 Summer Olympics and since then is being used as one of Barcelona's major sports harbours. The Port Olímpic is home to one of Barcelona's most famous artpieces, el Peix d'or” by Frank Gehry right, located next to the Casino de Barcelona, and a number of the city's most popular restaurants and nightlife venues. Opened in 1991, the Port Olímpic hosted the competitions of the different sailing disciplines during the Barcelona Olympic Games. It is located on the southern end of the area that was most affected by the urban renewal programme that was realised for the Olympics. The neighbourhood around the Port Olímpic was transformed thoroughly and is since called “Parc de Mar” or “Villa Olímpica del Poblenou”. There are two of the most popular beaches of Barcelona next to the Port Olímpic - the city beach “La Barceloneta” and the “Platja de la Nova Icària”.

In contrast to the the central theme of the visit to the Port Olímpic, the second part of this Barcelona city tour takes us to the Parc de la Ciutadella, which offers numerous sights whose history goes back as far as the late middle ages. The Parc de la Ciutadella is named after a citadel which, built in the early 18th century, was the biggest fortress in Europe at the time. Because the inhabitants of Barcelona saw it as a symbol of opression by the Spanish central government, the citadel of the Parc de la Ciutadella was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the power struggles between the Spanish and the Catalan government. The citadel was finally demolished in the late 19th century. However, there are three architectonial remainders that still exist today: The arsenal, now the parliament of Catalunya, the church, and the former governor's palace. Among the park's main attractions are the zoo of Barcelona (once home to the famous albino gorilla Snowflake) and the “Cascada”, a large and impressive fountain designed by the architect Josep Fontsére, with some minor contributions by the young Antoní Gaudí, who later designed the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. The Parc de la Ciutadella is also home to the museum of natural science and the zoology museum of Barcelona, both pavilions from the 1888 Ba
