Activity itinerary

Arenes de Lutece

  • 1h
Your guide, and expert of Paris history will bring to life the importance of the games in the daily life of the gallo-romans, back in Lutetia 2000 years ago. Likely built in the 1st century AD, they were destroyed two centuries later during the Germanic invasions. They gradually disappeared until, in 1869, a miracle occurred. Rue Monge was opened, and the arena was reborn. A quintessential place of entertainment in Roman life, the arena would probably not be there today without Victor Hugo. In 1869, the city council wanted to build a tram depot on the site, but the writer fought back: "It is impossible that Paris, the city of the future, should renounce the living proof that it was once a city of the past." Thus, what is now the oldest monument in Paris endures, and the arena appears to have been among the largest in Gaul, with a capacity of 15,000 people.
