Begin your journey with a visit to Prison Island, just a half-hour from Stone Town. Famous for its giant tortoises, which have been living there since 1919 after being brought from Aldabra Seychelles, the island is also a fantastic spot for snorkelling and sunbathing. Once a quarantine station, it became the site where the British planned to build the Stone Town prison in the 1890s, though the prison was never completed.
