What you can expect

Take a day to venture out of Osaka to the city of Nara, which was the capital of Japan until the late 8th century. Chauffeured in a private taxi, you can see all of the ancient city's historic landmarks, including Todai Temple, Kasuga Taisha, and the famous wild deer of Nara Park.

Get picked up from your hotel in Osaka by a private taxi and drive towards Nara. The ancient city was the capital of Japan from 710 to 794 AD during the Nara Period and remains an important historic and cultural site today. Your driver takes you to Nara Park, which is famous for its free-roaming wild deer. As you explore the beautiful area, you can pick up special deer crackers to hand-feed to the friendly creatures. Also visit the Todai-ji temple adjacent to the park, famed for its Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall) which contains one of Japan's largest bronze statues of Buddha.

After a break for lunch, head next to Kasuga Taisha, Nara's most celebrated shrine and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Roam the shine's inner buildings to see its famous bronze and stone lanterns, which are only lit twice a year, and learn of its history. Finally, stop by Yakushi-ji, a beautiful temple originally built in the 7th century before its reconstruction in the 1970s. The temple houses a Yakushi trinity, a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art, which attracts visitors year round. At the end of your tour, enjoy picturesque views of mountains and countryside rolling past as you make the drive back to Osaka.
