The river's larger volume gives you a real sense of Alaska’s raw power as it slices between two distinct mountain ranges, the jagged Chugach and the ancient Talkeetnas. The scenic views are simply breathtaking, with rising peaks in every direction, including the massive Matanuska Glacier visible on the shuttle to your put in.
The trip starts on Caribou Creek, a low-volume tributary that serves as a great training ground before hitting the bigger rapids downstream. Once the creek merges with the glacial waters of the South Fork, the river turns into a roaring Class III & IV whitewater adventure.
