What you can expect

NOVA's Private Lions Head run offers a truly unforgettable adventure! Experience the power of this glacial-fed river as you raft under the rare evening twilight, showcasing one of the many unique features that make Alaska so extraordinary. With water levels peaking in the evening, this trip provides an entirely different perspective of Lions Head—offering larger waves, deeper holes, and even more intense rapids than our morning and afternoon runs. Perfect for those seeking more excitement, this thrilling ride is a favourite among locals!

The Lions Head section of the Matanuska River is where it all started for NOVA – our original river trip since 1975, and still a local favourite. Known for its thrilling Class III & IV rapids, this adventure offers an unforgettable ride through one of Alaska’s most beautiful landscapes.

This glacial river is packed with excitement, featuring crashing waves and Class III & IV boulder gardens for direct action. Whether you're a first-timer or an experienced rafter, this trip is perfect for anyone looking for a rush.

The river's larger volume gives you a real sense of Alaska’s raw power as it slices between two distinct mountain ranges, the jagged Chugach and the ancient Talkeetnas. The scenic views are simply breathtaking, with rising peaks in every direction, including the massive Matanuska Glacier visible on the shuttle to your put in.

The trip starts on Caribou Creek, a low-volume tributary that serves as a great training ground before hitting the bigger rapids downstream. Once the creek merges with the glacial waters of the South Fork, the river turns into a roaring Class III & IV whitewater adventure. Along the way, you'll pass the iconic ‘Lions Head,’ a massive volcanic plug that rises majestically over the Matanuska Glacier.

As the pioneers of rafting on the Matanuska River, NOVA has led a variety of tours throughout the years, covering the entire length of the river. The northern Glenn Highway, which accesses this river area, is a National Scenic Byway, offering jaw-dropping views on your way to the launch site. Located just two hours north of Anchorage, this iconic half-day trip is one of the Mat-Su Valley’s best-kept secrets.
