Wet plate photography is a forgotten photographic technique from yesteryear that was used all over the world in the 19th century. Many portraits of historical figures were made using this technique. Utilising special photo chemicals, images can be made on a metal plate, which is known as a tintype. What makes a tintype so captivating is its sheer uniqueness - you won't find it just anywhere. Everything in the process of making a tintype must be done by hand; yes, it really is a handmade photograph! In this experience, I will take your tintype portrait. Throughout the session, you can observe the process as I use a large format camera and process the tintype in my darkroom. I will explain each step of the process, so by the time you leave my studio, you will have a basic understanding of the process and your own tintype portrait in your hand.
