We start at the place where the Saale and Unstrut rivers meet - the Blütengrund. The sculptor and painter Max Klinger once said of this spot: “It's like Tuscany here, only closer!” He himself owned a vineyard cottage and vineyard here until his death. We pay it a visit and enjoy the “Most Beautiful Wine View Saale-Unstrut 2012” at the same time. We also pass one of the highlights of the region - the stone picture book (german: Steinernes Bilderbuch). In the 18th century, the jeweller Johann Christian Steinauer had 12 stone reliefs carved out of the red sandstone rock of his vineyard. We follow the course of the Unstrut to the small winegrowing town of Freyburg, the home and deathplace of gymnastics father Friedrich Ludwig Jahn and home to the famous Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellars. Passing steep terraces and historic vineyard cottages, we reach the 120-year-old Zeddenbach mill. Before we make our way back, a small private coffee roastery awaits us. The modern Caffee Moness is located in the small village of Balgstädt and has long ceased to be a secret address. We take the Unstrutbahn railway for part of our return journey before getting back on our bikes and following the Saale from Roßbach back to our start/end point.
