What you can expect

  • Saint Margaret's Luteran Church is a fortified church and the most important medieval construction in the town of Medias. With a history spanning from the 14th century till today, it is still an active worship place for about 600 luterans.

This tour starts at the entrance, just outside the old medieval gates. Continues with the history of the Trumpets Tower - and the legend explaining why it is leaning - and of the other 5 towers: The Bell Tower, The School Tower, The Ropemakers Tower, The Tailors Tower and Mary's Tower. Some are shaped similar, some not, and each has its legends.

We are going to enter Mary's Tower, which hosts the catholic chapel with its 15th century frescoes and an amazing, maybe unique, Pieta showing Jesus Christ being held by the Heavenly Father.

Next, we will climb down some stairs and go long a corridor, reaching the ground level of the Tailors Tower, which was transformed centuries ago into a prison cell, the first one in Medias. There are 2 more prison cells for us to visit, and in one of the them you can see the marks left by the imprisoned.

Last but not least: the lutheran church, with its three (maybe four) construction phases, and it's assymetrical nave. Inside we will take a tour of the frescos, of the two visible altars, the Ottoman prayer rugs and the vast array of christening basins.

Expect a tour for history geeks, young restoration professionals and people who want more than a standard tour.
