What you can expect

  • This tour connects Samarkand's four most important monuments on foot – the way the city was meant to be seen – with a local guide who fills in the history, the architecture and the legends between them.

    What You'll Do

    1. Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum — Meeting Point
Your guide meets you at the mausoleum of Amir Timur, the conqueror who made Samarkand the capital of an empire stretching from Delhi to Anatolia. Inside, under a ribbed turquoise dome, lie Timur, his sons, and his grandson Ulugh Beg – the astronomer king. Your guide explains why this small building became the architectural blueprint for the Taj Mahal, and tells the storey of the tomb's opening in 1941 and the curse that came with it.

    2. Walk to Registan Square – 15 minutes
An easy walk through the old city. Your guide points out everyday details along the way – what Samarkand looks like beyond the monuments.

    3. Registan Square – Guided Tour
The most famous square in Central Asia, and the reason most travellers come to Uzbekistan. Three madrasahs face each other across the plaza, built two hundred years apart:

    Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1420)
    Sher-Dor Madrasah (1636)
    Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1660)

Your guide decodes the tilework, the geometry and the calligraphy, and separates the real history from the legends locals still tell. Photo stops throughout – this is the shot everyone wants.

    1. Coffee Break
Rest at a café on Registan Square with a view of the madrasahs. Around 20–30 minutes to sit down, cool off and take it in.

    2. Walk to Bibi-Khanym Mosque – 15 minutes
On the way you'll pass the monument to Islam Karimov, first President of Uzbekistan. It's a natural opening to talk about the country's modern history, independence, and what daily life is actually like here today – a conversation you won't get from a guidebook.

    3. Bibi-Khanym Mosque
Timur built it to be the largest mosque in the Islamic world, using treasure and craftsmen brought back from his campaign in India – and elephants to haul the stone. Its scale is still overwhelming. Your guide explains why it began collapsing almost immediately, and tells the love storey between the queen and the architect that gave the mosque its name.

    4. Siyob Bazaar
The oldest and busiest market in Samarkand, right next to the mosque – and where locals genuinely do their shopping. Free time to try Samarkand's famous non bread, halva, dried fruit and nuts, and to browse traditional textiles, suzani embroidery and souvenirs. Your guide can help you order, taste and bargain.

    5. Walk to Shah-i-Zinda – 15 minutes

    6. Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis
The finale, and for many travellers the highlight of Samarkand. A narrow avenue of mausoleums built over eight centuries, walls covered floor to dome in blue and turquoise tile – some of the finest ceramic work anywhere in the Islamic world. Your guide takes you through it tomb by tomb: who's buried where, why it's a pilgrimage site, and the legend of the “living king” that gives the necropolis its name.
