What you can expect

  • Day 1: Addis Ababa to Asaita

Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera, where your Afar guide greets you with warm hospitality. After breakfast and coffee, drive across golden plains to Asaita, the Afar cultural capital. Along the way, glimpse nomadic life — camel caravans, water-bearing women, and dome-shaped Aris.

In the village, elders welcome you with blessings before sharing insights into Afar clan life, desert survival, and oral traditions. If Thursday, explore Assayta’s bustling market, brimming with spices, daggers, camel saddles, and salt blocks. Join local women to prepare Kofo (camel stew) and flatbread, then enjoy your meal together.

In the afternoon, learn to build Aris, try Afar attire, weave mats, or churn butter. As the sun sets, walk along the Awash River before a community feast, drum dances, and fireside stories. Overnight in a traditional hut or under the stars.

Day 2: Lake Afambo & Pastoral Life

At dawn, join a camel caravan to Lake Afambo, a shimmering oasis rich in birdlife. Meet fishermen, watch salt harvesting, and see date palm cultivation. Picnic under acacias with fresh bread, dates, and grilled fish, while discussing the challenges of desert life.

Visit a women’s group to hear perspectives on marriage, education, and tradition before heartfelt farewells. Return to Semera for a hotel stay.

Day 3: Semera to Hamed Ela

Travel to Afdera’s vast salt lake, meeting salt workers who use ancient techniques. Continue to Hamed Ela, passing Lake Giulietti and surreal salt landscapes. Take a floating dip in the high-salinity waters before arriving at camp for dinner under a sky ablaze with stars.

Day 4: Dallol & Erta Ale Volcano

Visit Dallol’s otherworldly sulphur pools, salt flats, and iron-rich springs — a riot of neon green, yellow, and red. Watch camel trains carry salt slabs towards market. Later, drive to Erta Ale and trek at sunset to its summit. Gaze into one of the world’s few permanent lava lakes — a mesmerising display of molten fire. Camp on the volcano’s slopes beneath the Milky Way.

Day 5: Erta Ale to Addis Ababa

Catch sunrise over black lava fields, then explore nearby craters before breakfast. Return across the desert to Semera for your flight to Addis Ababa.
