The China Art Museum was formerly the China Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. If you were unable to fully appreciate its grandeur during the Expo, now is your chance to leisurely explore this magnificent building. In addition to viewing the museum’s crown jewel—the multimedia version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival—the museum also features numerous artworks by modern artists. The exhibition hall for the multimedia version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival is located on the 49th floor. Since the Expo’s conclusion, this multimedia installation has been permanently housed here, and it remains a popular highlight of the China Art Museum. This floor also features the “Moon Rising Over the Sea—The Origins of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art” exhibition hall, where you can admire paintings from the “Shanghai School” that blend Chinese and Western styles; this is also a permanent exhibition. From the upper levels, visitors can look out the windows to overlook nearby former Expo venues, such as the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The other floors primarily showcase various artworks by renowned modern Chinese artists, as well as temporary exhibitions of domestic and international artworks. The content of the temporary exhibitions changes frequently, allowing visitors to enjoy artworks from museums around the world on an irregular basis. There are also many permanent exhibitions; larger-scale ones include the “Shadow Puppet Art Exhibition from the China Art Museum Collection,” “Wu Dialect—Invited Exhibition of Shanghai Artists,” and “He Youzhi’s Illustrated Stories—Exhibition of Donated Works from the Museum Collection,” all located on the ground floor.
