What you can expect

  • Step into the quiet, meditative world of the guqin, China’s most revered string instrument, beloved by philosophers and poets for over 3,000 years. Unlike the louder guzheng, the guqin speaks in whispers, echoing the Daoist and Confucian ideals of harmony, solitude, and self-cultivation.

Begin by discovering how the guqin embodies yin-yang balance, the five elements, and the ancient idea of “self-cultivation through music.” Understand why playing the guqin was a mandatory skill for Chinese scholars.

Under the guidance of an experienced teacher, learn fundamental plucking and pressing techniques: pi, tuo, mo, tiao. Feel the silk-and-steel strings under your fingertips.

Practice a short, beautiful passage from a classical guqin piece. No musical background is needed, just patience and presence. Listen to a live performance of a full guqin classic, such as Flowing Water or Three Variations of the Plum Blossom. Your guide will explain the imagery and mood behind the music.

Before or after the session, relax with a cup of authentic Chinese tea, such as oolong, pu’er, or jasmine. A perfect way to digest the experience.
