Step into the Jing'an Temple, a sanctuary nestled amid the skyscrapers and heavy traffic of Shanghai’s bustling West Nanjing Road business district. First built during the Three Kingdoms period, it boasts a history of over 1,700 years. As Shanghai’s oldest existing Buddhist temple, it lends its name to Jing’an District and bears witness to the city’s thousand‑year transformation.

Just one wall separates the noisy mortal world from a serene Buddhist realm. The moment you step through the temple gate away from the busy streets, restlessness fades away. With red walls, gilded tiles, and upturned eaves, the architecture blends traditional Han‑style design with Tibetan aesthetics. When sunlight falls, the golden roofs shine bright, and wind chimes tinkle softly, bringing a peaceful and soothing atmosphere.

The temple features a solemn layout. The Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, and Three Saints Hall stand in sequence, elegant and magnificent. It houses numerous precious relics, including a giant jade Buddha carved from a single piece of Burmese white jade. Sacred Buddha statues, delicate stone and wood carvings reflect profound Buddhist culture and ancient craftsmanship.

The towering Jing’an Pagoda rises within the compound, forming a striking contrast with the halls. Wisps of sandalwood smoke drift through the courtyard. Visitors come to pray or stroll, escaping the rush of urban life for a moment of inner peace.

No need to travel deep into mountains for spiritual tranquility. At this ancient city centre temple in modern Shanghai, listen to faint Buddhist chants and smell curling incense. Let this pure sanctuary soothe your mind and ease all weariness and chaos.
