Guangyuan Qianfo Cliff: Buddhist Charm Carved on the Ancient Shu Path
The Jialing River has surged for thousands of years, witnessing the vicissitudes of the ancient Shu Path. Nestled on the crimson cliff by the river in Guangyuan lies Qianfo Cliff, a grand Tang Dynasty epic carved into stone. As the largest and longest-excavated grotto group in Sichuan, it dates back to the Northern Wei Dynasty and flourished in the Tang Dynasty. Crafted over more than 400 years, it freezes the mortal prosperity and Buddhist serenity of millennia on the riverside precipice.
Stretching 388 metres, the cliff is dotted with over 900 niches and more than 7,000 Buddha statues, densely layered along the river. Unobscured by grand palaces, every statue stands exposed to mountains, rivers, sun and moon, weathering countless years of wind and frost. The statues of the Northern Wei Dynasty feature simple and elegant slender lines with remote and solemn charm, while those of the Tang Dynasty are plump and exquisite with flowing robe drapes. The aesthetic essence of successive dynasties settles in these grottoes, presenting a thousand-year evolution of art at a single glance.
Wandering along the riverside plank road, surprises await every step. Beneath your feet winds the surging Jialing River; gentle river breezes brush past your ears, while rows of solemn Buddha statues come into view. The scenic spot boasts unique and stunning relics: the rare lotus-held Guanyin wears a soft and soothing gaze; the Dayun Cave preserves age-old stories exclusive to Guangyuan; the time-honored Lotus Cave retains delicate and vivid patterns, embodying the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient artisans.
Less crowded and renowned than the Longmen and Maijishan Grottoes, Qianfo Cliff exudes unparalleled tranquility. Embracing the ancient Shu Path and adjoining the river, it perfectly integrates magnificent natural scenery and profound human heritage. Amidst stones, river waters, ancient Buddhas and gentle winds, walking here feels like travelling through time, with all impetuous emotions calmed by the timeless Buddhist aura.
One cliff holds a thousand years of history; one Buddha witnesses the eternal rivers and mountains. Never flaunting its profound heritage, Qianfo Cliff silently narrates the past glory of the ancient Shu Path through mottled stone carvings and lifelike statues. Come to Guangyuan for a grotto journey, tread the ancient Shu Path, admire the Buddha shadows by the river cliff, and encounter the tenderness and shock spanning thousands of years in these ancient stone relics.
