What you can expect
Welcome to the Lightner Museum, an iconic landmark in the heart of historic St. Augustine. This extraordinary museum, housed in the former Hotel Alcazar—a Gilded Age resort commissioned by Standard Oil executive Henry Flagler—provides an immersive experience in art, architecture, history, and design.
At the core of the museum are its captivating collections. Featuring everything from Gilded Age furniture and vintage typewriters to American Brilliant Era cut glass and Victorian mechanical musical instruments, the Lightner Museum's collections are diverse, rich, and consistently engaging.
Otto Lightner, the museum's founder, described it as a “collection of collections.” A prominent figure in the American hobbies boom of the early 20th century, Lightner was a strong proponent of the benefits of collecting. In an essay published in the inaugural edition of his Hobbies magazine, Lightner wrote, “Have you a hobby? Certainly, if you have not, you should have one. Hours of keen enjoyment await you as a collector… Your leisure hours may be made profitable ones, profitable in knowledge and financial reward.”
While Lightner endorsed all kinds of hobbies, from stamp collecting to cigar label gathering and wood whittling, he had the resources to build an extensive personal collection of fine and decorative art, natural history specimens, and Americana from the 19th and early 20th centuries. He initially opened a Museum of Hobbies in Chicago in 1934. Alongside his own collection, Lightner invited readers of Hobbies to send their collections to be displayed at his museum. In 1946, after staying at St. Augustine’s Hotel Ponce de Leon, Lightner purchased the adjacent Hotel Alcazar to serve as the permanent home for his collection.
Today, the Lightner Museum's collections are showcased in the former Gilded Age resort hotel, providing a historic backdrop for its eclectic displays. This creates an unconventional and immersive museum experience that captivates visitors of all ages.
