Stockholm began here. Gamla Stan is the island where the city was founded in 1252, and this classic 2–2.5-hour walk covers it properly: the Royal Palace, Stortorget and the Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520, Mårten Trotzigs gränd – the narrowest street in the city at 90 cm – and Riddarholmen, where Sweden’s kings are buried. Run by a Scandinavian walking-tour operator since 2015: local guides, clear history, and a punctual start every day of the year.
The walk starts outside Gamla Stan metro station and begins with a small secret: Järnpojken, the Iron Boy, a 15-cm statue that is the smallest public monument in Stockholm. From there you cross to Riddarholmen, the Knights’ Island, for the best waterfront view of the city and Riddarholmen Church, the burial place of Swedish monarchs for three centuries. Back on the main island you pass the House of Nobility, squeeze through Mårten Trotzigs gränd, and see the German Church of the Hanseatic merchants who once ran Stockholm’s trade – and an 11th-century Viking rune stone built into a street corner.
The route ends where Swedish history turned. On Stortorget, the main square, Christian II of Denmark had some 80 people executed in November 1520 – the Stockholm Bloodbath that led to Gustav Vasa’s uprising and the modern Swedish state. The square is now home to the Nobel Prize Museum. You continue to Storkyrkan, Stockholm’s cathedral, where the Crown Princess was married in 2010, and finish at the Royal Palace, the official residence of the King and one of the largest palaces in Europe.
