Overview

The journey begins at the corner of Royal and Canal Streets in Old New Orleans. This was the gateway to the nineteenth century Creole “promenade publique”. It was a lavish and decadent existence, filled with art, banquets, opera, architecture, duels, shopping and no shortage of Bordeaux and Bourbon. The Creoles even insist that they invented the cocktail.

This French Quarter lifestyle in this crescent of the Mississippi River gradually gives way to the twentieth century traditions of Mardi Gras, jazz, and the rich bohemian existence of artists, musicians and writers. We will visit with William Faulkner, Louis Prima, Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote along the way.

From Monkey Wrench Corner, Pirates Alley, Jackson Square, to the Battle of New Orleans… come with me… and hold on to your chapeau!

The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Activity itinerary

The Historic New Orleans Collection (Pass by)
The Historic New Orleans Collection is a museum that seeks to display and publish items relating to the culture and history of New Orleans. The Collection Museum has previously exhibited information about the Battle of New Orleans, New Orleans cuisine, the Sugar Bowl and life after Hurricane Katrina. Many exhibits are free and open to the public.
St. Louis Cathedral (Pass by)
The St. Louis Cathedral is the home of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans. The parish has over 6000 members and it was designated as a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1964. Hurricane Katrina inflicted notable damage to the cathedral and especially to its prized pipe organ which had to be sent away to be rebuilt. The cathedral is supposedly haunted by Fr. Antonio de Sedella, a former priest at the cathedral whose body is buried within the church.
