Originally built as the Temple of Athena in the 5th century B.C., it still retains the imposing Doric columns incorporated into its walls. Converted into a Christian church in the 7th century A.D., it was stripped of its furnishings and decorations during Arab rule, before being reconsecrated by the Normans in 1085. After the 1693 earthquake, its façade was rebuilt in the splendid Sicilian Baroque style, giving Syracuse Cathedral the striking appearance that today dominates Piazza Duomo. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Syracuse Cathedral is a veritable book of stone, where history, art, and faith intertwine.
