Carved by volcanic forces over tens of thousands of years, Takachiho Gorge is one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural landscapes, nestled in the mountains of northern Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island. This spectacular canyon is defined by dramatic columnar basalt cliffs rising 80–100 metres above the emerald waters of the Gokase River. The gorge offers a striking natural setting that transforms with the seasons — lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant reds and golds in autumn, and a quiet, misty atmosphere in winter. At its heart lies the iconic Manai Falls, where a ribbon of water cascades into the river below, creating one of Kyushu’s most photographed scenes. Visitors can take in the views from scenic lookout points along the rim, while those able to access the walking paths can experience the gorge from closer range. Some areas include stairs and uneven terrain, which may limit accessibility. However, upper viewpoints allow all visitors to enjoy the location.
