Overview
Hallertau cycling tour - Visiting the home of hops
The Hallertau hop country is known as the largest contiguous hop-growing region in the world. Anyone planning a cycling tour to Hallertau does not have to be an adventurer. But you should be prepared for surprises when you visit this hilly landscape in the middle of Bavaria. In any case, Hallertau is a paradise, especially in summer. Then wide, green hop gardens dominate the landscape. This cycling tour takes you along the “Holledauer Hopfentour” cycle path around Hallertau. The tours of the Hallertau cycle route are a recommendation and can of course also be put together individually.

The Benedictine monastic community was founded over 900 years ago at the foot of the Wendelstein in Bayrischzell and moved from there to Scheyern in 1119. Since then, the monks have lived in this historic place, which was once the ancestral castle of the Wittelsbach family. The monastic community runs a number of businesses, including the monastery brewery and the monastery butcher's shop, as well as an inn with a brewery lounge and beer garden. In all of its businesses, the monastery strives to promote regional cycles.
Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm
- 1h
For the return journey, the route via Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm is recommended. In 2011, the city was the only German city to be awarded the international LivCom Award by the United Nations and in 2013 it received the German Sustainability Award for its ecological orientation. In 2017, the small Bavarian State Garden Show took place here, and its parks and green spaces can still be used, admired and experienced today.
Day 4: Straßhof - Gütlsdorf
- 1 stop
- Meals: breakfast
- Accommodation: Overnight stay in the 3-star Hotel Ostermeier´s
Osterwaal
- 20m
A short detour to the Maria Hilf Chapel near Osterwaal, dreamily situated in a forest clearing, is our tip for this day. The origins of the "Maria Hilf" chapel go back to 1814, when grateful parents had an image of the Virgin Mary set up for the inexplicable healing of their sick child and often prayed in front of it. Word of the miraculous healing quickly spread, and soon many people seeking help came to pray in front of the beech tree with the image of the Virgin Mary. In 1875, a simple little chapel was built next to the beech tree.
Day 5: Gütlsdorf – Pfeffenhausen – Ratzenhofen – Gütlsdorf
- 2 stops
- Meals: breakfast, snacks
- Accommodation: Overnight stay in the 3-star Hotel Ostermeier´s
Spielplatz Biergarten Ratzenhofen
- 2h
You drive from Gütlsdorf to Ratzenhofen Castle, a lovingly restored gem with its own castle chapel, which was first mentioned in documents in 1040. Under shady chestnut trees you can enjoy fresh beer from stone mugs in the castle beer garden (open seasonally, Friday to Sunday) and the brass band plays every Sunday afternoon. Numerous events from spring to autumn ensure varied entertainment.
Mainburg
- 15m
The return journey goes via Mainburg, the secret "capital" of Hallertau. Here the "green gold", hops, is not only grown, but also processed and shipped all over the world. There are many opportunities to stop off around the central market square with its historic buildings before the last leg of the journey back to the hotel.
Day 6: Gütlsdorf – Bad Gögging
- 1 stop
- Meals: breakfast
- Accommodation: Overnight stay in the 3-star Hotel Centurio
Weissbierbrauer Kuchlbauer
- 2h
- Admission ticket not included
We recommend a stop at Kuchlbauer in Abensberg. The Kuchlbauer wheat beer brewery has had the right to brew since 1300, making it one of the oldest breweries in the world. Kuchlbauer's Beer World is a cult site for beer that combines the themes of beer and art in a unique way. Since 2010, the Kuchlbauer Tower, an architectural project by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, has attracted several thousand visitors every year. You can experience the tower up close on a guided tour (fees apply). You can also visit the KunstHausAbensberg, built according to plans by Peter Pelikan (fees apply). The exhibition gives you an insight into the plans, work and life of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Day 7: Bad Gögging – Kelheim – Weltenburg Monastery – Limes Thermal Baths
- 5 stops
- Meals: breakfast, snacks
- Accommodation: Overnight stay in the 3-star Hotel Centurio
Liberation Hall
- 1h
- Admission ticket not included
We recommend a short bike tour on the Danube Cycle Path via Weltenburg to Kelheim. There you will find the imposing round building of the Liberation Hall on the Michelsberg in Kelheim. King Ludwig I had the memorial built for the victorious battles against Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815 and as a memorial to the unity of Germany.
Donaudurchbruch
- 20m
- Admission ticket not included
From Kelheim, part of the route to Weltenburg Monastery can be covered by boat across the Danube (boat trip for a fee, payable on site). This boat trip is one of the most beautiful excursion destinations in Bavaria and leads through the "Weltenburger Enge" nature reserve with the impressive Danube Gorge. In 2020, it was awarded the title of "First National Natural Monument in Bavaria".
Monastery Weltenburg
- 1h
Weltenburg Monastery was founded around the year 600 by wandering monks, making it the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria. Around 800, the abbey adopted the rule of Saint Benedict. The Weltenburg Monastery Brewery looks back on an eventful, centuries-long history and can proudly call itself the oldest monastery brewery in the world. And in the associated beer garden, you can enjoy one of the award-winning house beers.
Kastell Abusina am Limes
- 20m
Just before Bas Gögging is the Roman fort in Eining, a former cohort fort and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Limes. It is open to visitors free of charge at any time as an open-air museum.
