What you can expect

  • Begin your journey in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, before flying to the remote town of Ölgii, the gateway to the nomadic heartland. Upon arrival, be transported to the Bayan-Ölgii province, a region defined by the Altai Mountains, where the Kazakh nomadic culture has preserved the ancient art of training golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) to hunt small game.

Reside in traditional gers (felt tents), experiencing the daily rhythms of nomadic life, which include milking livestock, preparing traditional dairy products, and witnessing the meticulous care required to maintain the health and hunting readiness of the eagles.

Watch as the hunters, often multi-generational practitioners, demonstrate the uurga (a long pole with a lasso) used for herding, a skill that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The highlight of the experience is the demonstration of the hunt, where the eagle is released from a high vantage point to pursue prey, showcasing the symbiotic bond between the bird and its master. This practice is not merely a sport but a survival strategy that has sustained Kazakh families in the harsh, high-altitude environment of the Altai for generations.

Beyond the hunting, the tour offers an intimate look at the landscape—a terrain that transforms from barren, rocky expanses to emerald-green pastures during the short summer months—providing a rare glimpse into a vanishing way of life that emphasises sustainability and respect for the natural world.
