What you can expect
The guided tour of Verona will be a walk to discover its symbolic monuments that have made it famous all over the world, a historic centre full of architecture, art and many curiosities that attract visitors of all ages. It starts from the beautiful medieval Scaligero Bridge of Castelvecchio over the Adige river in marble and red bricks, adjacent to the castle, an imposing fortress erected to defend the city from enemy attacks with the Mastio Tower in the centre, now a museum.
We walk in the historic centre through Porta Borsari, one of the oldest gates along the Roman walls of Verona, until we reach piazza delle Erbe, the meeting place of the city for evening aperitifs in the many bars among the historic buildings such as the baroque Maffei Palace with the statues of Greek gods, the Merchants' House and the Town Hall; to embellish the oldest square in Verona, the heart of commerce, there are also the fountain of Madonna Verona and the very high Lamberti Tower from which you can enjoy a unique view over the whole city.
We continue the tour by visiting the interior of the Cathedral of S. Maria Matricolare in Gothic-Renaissance style with floors covered with mosaics, and admiring the famous painting by Titian of the Assumption of the Virgin. A few steps from the Cathedral we find the Ponte Pietra, the only Roman bridge left in the city, which connects the Roman Theatre used for concerts and shows on the other side of the Adige. Among the picturesque streets of the historic centre of Verona it is a must to explore Piazza dei Signori with the statue of Dante in the centre, the administrative centre of the city with impressive buildings such as the Scaligeri Palace, the Loggia del Consiglio and the Palazzo della Ragione with its elegant staircase; also beautiful are the Scaliger Arches in sumptuous Gothic style, a monumental tomb of the ancient Lords of Verona.
We continue the walk in one of the symbolic places of Verona, the House of Juliet of the Capulet family made famous by Shakespear's tragedy of the two lovers with the iconic balcony where Juliet looked out to talk to Romeo, the wall covered with letters and messages from love and the famous bronze statue of Juliet full of curiosities and a favourite destination for selfies. We end the guided tour by crossing Via Mazzini, the shopping street and the well of love to get to the symbolic monument, the imposing Arena of Verona, built in the 1st century AD. to host the fights between gladiators, today it is the third largest amphitheatre in Italy and the largest open-air opera house in the world which hosts prestigious concerts and shows of various kinds every year.
