In Old Vienna, couples in love got a special thrill with what were called “porcelain rides.” The man would get into the carriage with the lady of his heart and whisper to the fiaker coachman to hire him for a “porcelain ride.” The coachman then knew that this was a “delicate” matter and drove as carefully as if he were transporting porcelain. And what happened in the carriage was only the business of the passengers in love…
