What you can expect

Begin your journey at Lake Sevan, one of the world’s highest freshwater lakes, surrounded by mountains. Continue to Hayravank Monastery, a 9th-century monastery built on a steep cliff above the lake. Hear a local legend linked to its name and construction.

Next, visit Noratus, the largest collection of medieval Armenian khachkars (cross-stones) in the world. This unique “open-air stone library” preserves dozens of masterpieces from the 9th–17th centuries, each with its own symbolic storey.

Drive through lunar landscapes and multicoloured mountains on the Vardenyats Pass, one of Armenia’s most spectacular highland roads. Stop at the Orbelian Caravanserai, one of the Silk Road’s best-preserved caravanserais, built for merchants and travellers in the 14th century.

Continue to Smbataberd Fortress, a ridge crowned by one of Armenia’s most formidable citadels. Smbataberd flourished between the 11th–13th centuries as the Orbelian family’s stronghold.

See a fully authentic medieval bridge over the Arpa River, not a single stone has been replaced. Until recently, it was still used by local farmers driving grape harvests across the river.

Enter the dramatic Areni Gorge, a canyon of red cliffs leading to Noravank, a 13th-century architectural masterpiece and a symbol of medieval Armenia. On the way back, weather permitting, enjoy warm sunset views of the valley and the silhouette of Mount Ararat.
