Suminagashi is a Japanese water painting technique used to create abstract, fluid patterns on the surface of water, which are then transferred to paper. The word “suminagashi” literally means “floating ink” and refers to the process of applying ink to patterns on water which, due to its surface tension, melts into calm, undulating patterns.
The Suminagashi experience is therefore more than just a painting technique – it is a meditative process that involves attention, patience, a sense of rhythm and flow. Some artists and people who practice this technique describe it as a way to connect with nature and inner peace, because the whole process is very contemplative and requires concentration, but also openness to unexpected results.
