What you can expect
Begin your adventure with an early morning flight from Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) to Zanzibar (ZNZ). Enjoy stunning aerial views of the turquoise Indian Ocean and the scattered islands of the archipelago. Upon landing, a private driver will whisk you to the Stone Town waterfront, where you will board a traditional motorised dhow for a 30-minute boat ride to Prison Island (Changuu Island).
Spend your morning walking through the historic ruins of a former quarantine station and feeding the island’s most famous residents: the Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old. After interacting with these gentle giants and enjoying a short snorkelling session in the surrounding coral reefs, head back to the boat for the next leg of your journey.
By midday, your boat will dock at the breathtaking Nakupenda Beach, a pristine white sandbank that emerges from the sea during low tide. The highlight of the afternoon is a lavish seafood BBQ lunch prepared right on the sand. Feast on a giant platter featuring grilled lobster, jumbo prawns, calamari, octopus, and fresh fish, accompanied by Swahili-spiced rice and a refreshing assortment of tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and watermelon.
After lunch, the afternoon is yours to spend in paradise—swimming in the crystal-clear shallow waters, sunbathing on the powdery sand, or simply relaxing under a shaded tent as the tide gently shifts around the sandbank.
In the late afternoon, return to the mainland for a guided walking tour of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Navigate the narrow, labyrinthine alleys, admiring the famous intricately carved Zanzibari doors and visiting landmarks like the Old Fort and the Freddie Mercury Museum.
If you prefer a traditional seated meal instead of the beach BBQ, Lukmaan Swahili Restaurant is a highly recommended spot in the city for authentic Zanzibari biryani and local specialities.
As evening approaches, the tour concludes at the Night Food Market in Forodhani Gardens, where you can sample the famous “Zanzibar pizza” and sugarcane juice amidst a lively community atmosphere. This bustling seaside market is the perfect final stop to soak in the local culture before your driver provides an airport drop-off for your return flight to Dar es Salaam.
