What you can expect
Begin your journey with a scenic drive to Matemwe or Muyuni Beach, the gateway to Mnemba Island, one of the most celebrated marine reserves in Zanzibar. Upon arrival, board a traditional wooden dhow or speed boat, depending on the package level, and set sail towards the crystal-clear waters surrounding Mnemba Atoll.
As you approach the area, keep your eyes open for pods of wild bottlenose dolphins that frequently swim and play in the waves. This region is famous for its dolphin sightings, and while encounters aren’t guaranteed, many visitors are lucky to witness these intelligent creatures swimming alongside the boat or leaping out of the water.
If the conditions are right, have the opportunity to swim and snorkel near the reef. The Mnemba reef is a protected marine sanctuary and offers one of the best snorkelling experiences in Zanzibar. Dive into the warm Indian Ocean and explore vibrant coral gardens teeming with colourful tropical fish, starfish, sea cucumbers, and occasionally green turtles.
After enjoying the underwater beauty, return to the shore where a fresh seafood lunch or light snacks (depending on your chosen package) will be served. Enjoy grilled fish, coconut rice, seasonal fruits, and refreshing drinks while relaxing on the beach and soaking in the tropical surroundings. There will also be time to sunbathe or take a short walk along the beach before transitioning to the next leg of your tour.
In the early afternoon, your driver will transfer you to the heart of Zanzibar — Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a cultural melting pot that captures the spirit of centuries of trade, history, and heritage. Upon arrival, be joined by a professional local guide who will take you on a guided walking tour through the winding alleyways, bustling markets, and historic landmarks of this captivating town.
Visit the House of Wonders, once the tallest building in East Africa and a symbol of the Sultanate’s architectural ambition. Explore the Old Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later used by the Omani Arabs. Discover the Sultan’s Palace Museum, Anglican Cathedral (built on the site of the former slave market), and the Freddie Mercury House, the birthplace of Queen’s iconic lead singer. Throughout the tour, your guide will share stories of Zanzibar’s colonial past, the slave trade, Swahili culture, and the island’s Arab, Indian, Persian, and European influences.
