A giant colored walkway sits on the roof of this important Danish art museum, providing visitors with a truly alternative view of the city.
Aarhus’ biggest art museum is one of the largest in Northern Europe, spanning ten levels and over 190,000 square feet (17,700 square metres) of floor space. ARoS has three permanent collections of art, covering the Danish “Golden Age,” Danish Modernism and Contemporary Art. Another nine rooms are allocated to international installations and a large area is dedicated to temporary and travelling exhibitions. Enjoy the innovative architectural design of the striking ARoS building, which is as popular as the works inside. An interactive installation piece adorns its roof, providing a unique view of the city.
Make your way through ARoS’ permanent collections to acquaint yourself with Danish art from the past three centuries. A collection of Danish work from 1770 to 1900 showcases a movement that is now known as the “Golden Age.” Landscapes, sculptures and portraits by artists such as Eckerberg, Lundbye and Skovgaard feature prominently in the collection. A second collection of Danish art covers Danish Modernism, while the third collection covers Contemporary Art from around the world. Pay a visit to Boy, an intriguing sculptural piece by the Australian Ron Muecks. The incredibly realistic, larger-than-life sculpture is a highlight of the museum’s collection.
Make your way to the gallery’s rooftop for a different look at the city of Aarhus. Olafur Eliasson’s 500-foot (150-metre) Your Rainbow Panorama is an enclosed glass walkway that circles around the roof of ARoS. The panels of glass gradually shift through the colours of the rainbow, allowing you to experience the city in different hues.
ARoS is located just south of the city centre and can be reached easily on foot from most downtown hotels. The museum is well served by bus and there is street parking available in the area. ARoS has convenient wheelchair access. The museum is closed Mondays. There is a fee for admission.
