The historical castle and beautiful coastline make this tranquil town the perfect getaway from Sicily’s busier resorts.

A short drive from the bustling streets of Catania, Aci Castello offers great coastal views, charming, narrow streets and a blissfully peaceful atmosphere. Discover the castle and other ancient monuments in the town center and learn the legends of the surrounding Riviera dei Ciclopi coastline. Discover amazing geological formations and swim in warm waters along pristine beaches.

Aci Castello takes its name from the Norman Castle in the town sitting high on a lava rock. The castle was built on the site of an Arab fort and was an island until it was connected to the mainland by lava flow. Within the castle grounds, find a museum detailing the area’s history. Exhibits include a collection of rock samples showing the strange effects of mixing magma with sea water and a display of unusually shaped prehistoric skulls discovered in the area. Explore the castle grounds and enjoy magnificent views of Cyclops Rocks from the roof.

Long summers and the Mediterranean climate mean you can enjoy the beaches from March into October. Visit the surrounding coastline to find beautiful beaches. The nearest to town is Aci Trezza. Closer to town, select a sunbathing spot on one of the black lava rocks. These warm up throughout the day. You will see many locals enhancing their tans during the afternoon. Jump from the rocks into the sea to cool off.

Back in town, pick from a good selection of restaurants. Sample freshly caught fish, done in traditional Sicilian style. Continue to one of the lively bars on the seafront. Dance to a local band and drink a glass of the local specialty, limoncello, a sweet lemon liqueur.

Aci Castello is 6 miles (9 kilometers) from Catania. Buses run regularly, especially during the summer. You’ll find a small number of hotels and guesthouses if the sound of the Ionian Sea lapping onto the rocks and tranquil atmosphere of the town make you want to stay longer.

Quirky decor but great pool area!
"Unusal, quirky decor but a great hotel! Staff friendly and helpful, very clean, beds incredibly comfortable and a brilliant pool area. Breakfast quite basic (extra charge for fried eggs or omelette) and restaurant pricey as often is the case in hotels. Not central to Catania but lovely to be away ..."

Very nice, great room, but smoky.
"The hotel was great overall. The customer service was good. Our only complaint is that our room smelled like strong cigarettes. It was as if someone was smoking while cleaning. Towels, tissue paper, and pillow cases all as if we were breathing in ashtray. Aside from that, the view was great and the ..."

Nice hotel, close to the beach. very helpful owner
