Nestled among towering volcanic peaks, the small town of Agaete features a traditional church and beautiful, serene garden.

Stroll through Agaete’s narrow streets full of traditional, whitewashed houses and colourful wooden balconies. Learn about the culture of Agaete and the Canary Islands at the town museum and relax in tranquil gardens.

Make your way along the town’s winding roads to the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepción in the heart of Agaete. This church dates back to 1874. Its bright, whitewashed exterior matches perfectly with the surrounding shop fronts and houses. Gaze up to see the quaint, domed bell tower and arched windows sealed with wooden shutters. Step inside to admire the stunning glass chandelier that hangs from the domed ceiling in the centre of the church. Behind the altar are colourful figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

During your time at the church be sure to visit the small museum next door. Displays here are all dedicated to the history of the Bajada de la Rama festival that originates from a Guanche rain dance. A highlight of the museum is the exhibit of bright papier-mâché figures depicting popular characters from the town. If you are lucky enough to be here at the beginning of August when the festival takes place, you will be treated to a celebration of music and dancing that lasts for several days.

Escape to the fresh, fragrant air of Huerto de las Flores. This 19th-century garden has more than 300 tropical plants as well as varieties of pine and palm tree. Rest in the shade of leafy courtyards surrounded by the gentle trickle of stone fountains and listen to the cries of birds in the trees. Stop off at the secluded café to enjoy a refreshing drink among the flowers.

Agaete is located 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) inland on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. It is about a 30-minute drive from Las Palmas.

Agaete itself seems to close up for the winter. More restaurants/bars are open in Puerto de las Nieves but compared with resorts like Puerto de Mogan and Puerto Mogan in the south, at the end of January this resort is fairly quiet
