"I can deal with the small room, and no breakfast, i can also deal with the loud food truck parked in the back parking lot. What i cant deal with is finding q cockroach in my room and the staff acting like it was no big deal, then after being told i could call monday to speak to a manager. He shrugs it off and tells me to call corporate. I call corporate for them to reach out to the hotel and for the manager to tell them they have no record of the incident even though i brought the bug directly to the front desk and the gentleman working said he would note it in my account not to mention i had just spoke with the manager before being sent to corporate. Atleast take responsibility for not being clean. All they were willing to do was move me 3 rooms down. I will never stay here again if you dont want cockroaches all over your stuff i wouldnt stay either!!! Horrified and disgusted to say the least."
Home2 Suites by Hilton Des Moines at Drake University

"Overall, this is a great hotel. We stayed here because of the free parking and the room having a full-size fridge.
There is free, off-street parking, the area feels pretty safe, and there is a huge breakfast setup with oatmeal, breads, waffles, eggs, bacon, cheese... it's a true breakfast and not the sad continental breakfast you get at most places.
The two things that could be improved is that where they keep the luggage carts block the intercom and key swipe for after-hours entry, which can be a problem if you have limited mobility and are unable to move the carts or if you are juggling items and don't have hands free. Not a huge deal, but something that could be improved upon.
Also, they use the terrible polyester sheets on the bed, which are like sleeping in a trash bag. It means that we had to crank up the A/C to just be cool enough to sleep. I get that they are supposedly less maintenance, but they are terribly uncomfortable."

"The front desk staff was very friendly every time I had to visit the desk. The room was clean. The pool was perfect for my little granddaughter. The hot tub was one of the hottest I have ever been in. The pool was a good temperature as some hotel pools are a little colder than I prefer. The pool area might have needed some new atmosphere as at one time it might have had more plants and decor but now just a few average looking tropical plants and some furniture that maybe needed a good sanding and cleaned up a bit but still had lots of life in them. The beds and bedding were comfortable. The location was easy enough to get to but the signage for check in might need to be better marked. The very first time we stayed at The Gateway we drove around several times before we found a check in area under a canopy or underpass looking area that we thought might have been an entrance to a parking garage and while we where here we noticed another vehicle doing the same thing. But after our first day we found another entrance on the other side of the building where you park that was much easier to use and closer to the elevators. It also has nice little short walking path if you just want to be outside. The patio area did not have any furniture outside at the time we were there in early May except for 2 plastic chairs but there was a nice little waterfall back there. Aside from no continental breakfast, I would say this hotel marked every box we look for in a hotel."
"The room was very nice. We didn't use the kitchen but it looked pretty bare bones in the cabinets. there appeared to be enough to do some very basic cooking. The continental breakfast was okay but nothing special.
We still give it a 5 star because of the cleanness, friendliness and being very comfortable. We will be back."
