B&O Railroad Museum

B&O Railroad Museum
Discover the fascinating history of America's locomotive industry with train rides and entertainment at this National Historic Landmark.

You don't have to be a train enthusiast to enjoy the world's oldest railroad collection. The B&O Railroad Museum spans 16 hectares and is home to 150 steam, diesel and electric trains. Originally the site was where the first commuter railroad began. Fascinating antiques from the 19th century document the growth of this industry.

In 1828 the city of Baltimore was where the first tracks of a common carrier were put down. Named B&O after its Baltimore to Ohio River route, those first tracks are still there serving a 20-minute commuter train ride. In 1844 the first telegraph was sent by Samuel Morse to the B&O Railroad Depot from Washington DC.

From history buffs to young children, a trip to B&O Railroad Museum has something to suit every taste. Over at Mount Clare Shops, which has become a National Historic Landmark, you can check out the historic manufacturing complex. A trip to the Roundhouse is not to be missed, this being the site where the first steam engine, Tom Thumb, was built in America. With rolling stock, old signals and china used for on-board dining, there really is every locomotive relic imaginable on display here at the B&O Railroad Museum.

Children will not be disappointed with a ride on a small train to the land of Choo Choo Blueville. Carnival rides, a carousel and educational games in Kids Zone will have them entertained for hours. If you happen to visit at the weekend, catch one of the classic railroad stories being told where, afterwards, kids can join in on games from the story itself.

Situated only a short drive west of Inner Harbour, the Charm City Circulator bus will drop you there for free. Car parking is available for free also. The museum is open every day and children under 12 can avail of a discount. You aren't allowed bring food in with you but there is a café serving light bites. Train rides are available Wednesday to Sunday and in the warmer months only.
