Bardejov dates back to at least 1241 when it first appeared in written records. The settlement flourished in the 15th century, when its strategic position near European trade routes helped drive its growth. Many of the town’s well-preserved buildings date back to this time.

Occupying the centre of the plaza is the old town hall, a beautiful Renaissance building. It houses part of the Šariš MuseumOpens in a new window, one of the oldest museums in Slovakia. Stop by to browse displays dedicated to the medieval history of the area.
In the northern part of the square lies the 15th-century Church of St. AegidiusOpens in a new window, a Gothic basilica with a narrow pointed roof and spire. Marvel at the artistry of the detailed interior, which features carved iconography and ornate altars. Visit the Franciscan monastery near the town walls for further insights into Bardejov’s religious history.
Not far from the walls is Bardejov's Jewish Quarter, which was built in the early 19th century and contains some of its original buildings. See the Old Synagogue, which was completed in 1836, go to the ritual baths and visit Beith Hamidrash, the historic prayer hall.
Take a short drive out of the centre to find the Spa of Bardejov. Pamper yourself in the natural mineral waters, which once attracted Russian tsars and Austrian princesses. After your soothing moments, tour the nearby Museum of Folk Architecture. This open-air museum features several 19th- and 20th-century buildings.
