The Roman Catholic Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional is a neo-Gothic masterpiece and the largest of its kind in the Americas. The basilica was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and was completed in 1909, relying heavily on donations from worshippers. Townspeople donated stones to the church’s construction and in exchange their names were engraved into the rock.
Situated on a steep hill to the northeast of the historic center, the basilica is a prominent feature in the skyline from almost any viewpoint in the city. Admire the church’s intricate neo-Gothic details as you draw nearer. Spot the carved grotesques of native Ecuadorian animals such as armadillos, iguanas, dolphins and Galapagos tortoises that adorn the church’s arches.
