Beavertail Lighthouse

Caught the early morning sun as it rose over the horizon, its rays warming up this lighthouse on a very cold winter's day.

The lighthouse, established in 1749 at Beavertail Point, was the granddaddy of all Rhode Island lighthouses and only the third one—after Boston Harbor and Nantucket’s Brant Point—in the American colonies.
Today is a museum that features a collection of information, artifacts, and conversation about the history and site of the third-oldest lighthouse in North America.
The lighthouse is located in Beavertail State Park at the end of Beavertail Road, at the southern tip of Conanicut Island. There is free parking. The grounds are open to the public.

I recently watched a documentary on the English painter, JMW Turner. I was much moved by his treatment of light and how he could 'paint' the atmosphere. Here's my attempt to emulate this great artist.

Arriving at Beavertail State Park, the sun had not yet broke the horizon; the lighthouse was shining its beam into the darkness.

I wanted to capture the scene in front of me and that pre-dawn magic.
