Bergen op Zoom is a town in the province of North-Brabant. It has a rich history and virtually borders with the province of Zeeland.
Thanks to its long and colourful history, Bergen op Zoom is a holiday destination that will not disappoint. There’s plenty of history and culture and loads of outdoor activities. Start your visit in the city centre at Het Markiezenhof. This hôtel particulier from 1485 – 1520 has served a number of purposes: it has been used as a residence, administrative centre and military hospital. There's a fun indoor hunt that kids will certainly enjoy. The Gevangenpoort (gatehouse), aka 'Lievevrouwepoort', which was part of the fort walls in the Middle Ages, is also a must see. The building wasn't used as a prison until later. You should also plan some time for the synagogue which King William I gifted to the city. It has a gruesome history: in 1940, the Germans closed the synagogue and deported the Jewish community of some 60 people to concentration camps. The synagogue is no longer used as a place of worship.
Take the kids to the Blote Voetenpad, a path that is walked barefoot. Experience the sensation of warm sand, mud, soft moss and tickly grass. The kids will get a real kick out of it! Very close to Bergen op Zoom you’ll find the Drie Natuurpoorten (three gateways to nature): the Volksabdij O.L.V. Ter Duinen, Lievensberg and Beneden Sas. It's a great place to walk and enjoy the beautiful countryside. You’ll recognise the gateways by the four-metre high key at the entrance. There are information signs in the parks with a lot of interesting facts about the area.
