Bettles is a very small incorporated city in the state of Alaska, with a permanent population of only about 30 people. As well as being a direct portal to the Gates of the Arctic National Park, the town is within reach of other noted parks and land areas including Kobuk National Preserve to the west and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge further east.
Enjoy hiking through the woodland that engulfs the town on all sides. Watch for moose and caribou, both common in the area. Follow the winding path of the Koyukuk River as it flows past the eastern side of town and look for bears fishing for salmon in the shallows.
If you are a keen angler, bring your fishing gear. The conditions here are excellent, with a range of fish able to be caught. Find an idyllic spot on the banks of the fast-flowing river and enjoy the beautiful, tranquil landscape all around you.
For something a bit more adventurous, take a river challenge on a rafting trip. These can be organised in town and are a great way to see the sublime region from a slightly different perspective.
Bettles is located in central Alaska. The town is reachable only by plane, with flights from Fairbanks taking approximately 1 hour. Gates of the Arctic National Park is directly north. Visit the ranger centre in town for information and maps. Reserve a spot in one of the small number of lodges here. Most can also provide food for your stay.
