Bonn Marketplace

Bonn Marketplace featuring a square or plaza and a sunset
Stroll around Bonn’s historic market square and admire magnificent rococo architecture or have a refreshing meal in a lively outdoor café.

Historically, Bonn Marketplace (Bonner Marktplatz) was the central hub of the city, and today it retains the vital character of the city. Overlooked by spectacular 18th-century buildings and adorned with monuments and café umbrellas, Bonn Marketplace is an important civic site for local events, protests, marches and markets. Wander around the square and enjoy the energy of the city or attend one of the seasonal markets. Alternatively, simply relax in one of the square’s adjoining cafés and beer gardens.

Strolling through Bonn Marketplace, you’ll be awed by the architecture of its Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus). Completed in the 1700s, the town hall is a magnificent example of German rococo. Admire its gilded ornamentation and the elegant crest that crowns the façade. The Old Town Hall has welcomed some of Bonn’s most important international guests, such as Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II and John F. Kennedy.

Check out the square’s central monument. It dates back to 1777 and is comprised of an obelisk that stretches into the sky out of a small pool of water. As you walk through the cobbled square, you might see a local event or gathering. Depending on the season, you might catch one of the traditional markets held at Bonn Marketplace. One of these is the Weihnachtsmarkt, an event held all over Germany during the Christmas holiday season. Pick up gifts, souvenirs and traditional Christmas delicacies at one of these magical markets.

Find a café or pub with outdoor seating in the square. Coffee with cake is a typical treat in German cafés, while many pubs sell local brews such as weizen and naturtrüb. You can also go shopping at the retail strips that extend along the square’s borders.

While in the area, check out nearby attractions such as St. Remigius Church, Schloßkirche Bonn and the Kurfürstliches Schloss. The nearest public transit station is a bus stop on the square’s southeastern border. Bonn Marketplace is free to visit at any time of the day.
