Bromma is perhaps best known for its airport, yet it has much more to offer. Bromma is a suburb near Stockholm, so you are not only near attractions, but also have the entire Swedish capital close at hand. Anyone with an interest in architecture and unique buildings will have a lot to discover during a weekend in Bromma. You will find everything from ancient ruins to castles and residential areas, all bearing the conceptual imprint of their time.
The area is home to many relics from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Kämplakullet burial ground is a Bronze Age cairn in the Ålsten forest, and there is a stone with cup and ring marks in the Södra Ängby district from the same era. In Norra Ängby, KarsviksÖstergård dates back to the 1600s, though archaeologists have also found traces of many considerably older dwellings with raised foundations.
Gamla Bromma garden city consists of residential areas built between 1910 and the 1940s, such as Ulvsunda, Äppelviken and Stora Mossen. Äppelviken is where you will find Mälarvikens summer settlement, where homes were built at the dawn of the 20th century to serve as summer residences. One of the more widely known buildings is Stora Sjövillan.
The area's castles are even older and more lavish. Ulfsunda castle and Åkeshov castle both date back to the 17th century. Near Ulfsunda castle, you will find Lillsjön lake with Ulvsunda mill to the north, while Åkeshov castle, situated in the Judarskogen nature reserve, is another of Bromma’s best-loved gems.
In the middle of the Judarskogen nature reserve is Judarn lake, with adjacent walking trail Judarskogen also borders Mälaren lake. Not far from the forest you will also find Ängbybadet, where you can kick back on the sandy beach. The district of Smedslätten also has a greatly admired swimming beach known as Solviksbadet.
International and domestic flights fly directly into Bromma Airport. Don't miss Bromma Golf, located next to the airport with a 9-hole course and 80 driving ranges. The green line of the Stockholm underground stops at stations in Bromma and a trip from Stockholm central takes about 15-30 minutes. You will need to change to a train for certain destinations.
