• The secret to having an amazing travel experience is to pack in advance. First up, the essentials: passport, official ID, credit cards and any vital medications. Next, bring items that'll help pass the time, like your laptop or a few magazines. It's also a wise idea to bring your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. And of course, don't forget to pop in toiletry items like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a fresh change of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by authorities. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, chemicals agents and fuels, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim here is to feel as comfortable as possible. Pick slip-on footwear, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and don't forget to take a pullover in case it gets cold in the cabin.
• The result of lengthy periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect some passengers on long-haul flights. Lower your risks by drinking water, keeping your ankles and legs moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

Being organised before you arrive at the airport will help make your trip to Sims a pleasure. Read through our top tips for a speedy journey past security:

• First things first. Your passport and boarding pass will need to be shown to airport security personnel. Keep them someplace accessible so you don't have to dig around for them.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like coins, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.
