The mattresses were old and very soft. Anytime I moved in bed, the bed posts banged against the wall. I felt bad for the occupants next door. The rooms had a smell to them. There was also a dog staying in one of the rooms that I assumed was used by the owner's family and the dog would bark a lot. There was dog poop on the parking lot that I almost stepped in.

I agree that the foam scent is strong, and I have been assured it will dissipate. I am thankful that your sister pointed out the dog poop that we promptly removed. I am glad you did not get poo on your shoes. Thanks again for sharing!

The staff was super friendly and helpful. Our room was cute and clean. The beds were split into two bedrooms which was awesome, and instead of just one chair outside there were two chairs and a table. It all made for a pleasant stay. The bed was comfortable too.

We spent two nights. Motel was ok but for the price we expected maid service the second day and the WiFi was unusable. Owner was friendly and seemed very nice.

I would highly recommend avoiding this motel at all costs but before I get to the bad let me say I gave the motel an extra star because the lady that worked the front desk (and her cats) was extremely friendly throughout my entire stay. You will find this motel at a price point of $75-$86 which is WAY too high for what you get. I completely understand this is a motel in Northern Michigan but realistically this should be closer to $45/night. The Monarch website claims to have updated rooms which is completely incorrect. The room I had was extremely old and musty. The updates were a half-hearted paint job and some wall decorations from Home Goods. The A/C unit for the entire room was a very old window unit with a car air freshener attached to it. It did not cool the room at all since it was in the bathroom. My mini-fridge that was promised on the website did not close and did not stay cold enough. All rooms were claimed to be non-smoking yet the room (or the room next-door) had an overwhelming odor of smoke. But by far the worst thing that this room had to offer was the bed. I would say that the bed felt similar to laying on plywood propped up by concrete blocks. I have never in my life woke up with as much back and neck pain as I did from sleeping on that bed; I think I should have slept on the floor.

It was good.
The lady who checked us in was very friendly and efficient. We had a problem with the TV, and it was fixed immediately. Our room was very comfortable. The shower head was high enough to accommodate our six foot frames.

Tv didn’t work. Bugs all over the door (on the outside). Walls are paper thin. Water is probably well water but smelled awful. Very basic motel but surrounding houses and motels create an unpleasant f atmosphere.

Hello Cee, Thank you for your feedback. We will be more careful while cleaning to make sure the TV box is not place in front of power access on TV. You can tell that the owner takes pride in this motel. Recently remodeled and very clean. Not a huge room.. but I was alone so OK. I'd book again...

Moving on down the road
Linda and Joe Greene are the owners of the Monarch Motel. We arrived mid afternoon, clear and sunny. Linda was very friendly and engaging. My mistake was not inspecting the room before registering. The 'Hotel overview photo' showed a larger room on my Expedia travel confirmation E-mail of March 28th (itinerary # 7340610926093). We unloaded our suitcase and perused this rented room. It was clean, neat, and had a fiberglass single person shower stall. Not what we needed. My wife and I always shower together. I decided to talk to Linda about a different room. Walked to the front office which was located in Linda's residence. There was a closed sign on the door, it was locked. We decided to get something to eat and check out the town, Cheboygan MI. A beautiful day to site see. On returning to the Monarch, the closed sign was still on the office door. We loaded our unopened suitcase and decide to call Linda Greene on our C-phone. She was not in the mood to accommodate us. It was a too beautiful day to argue. We decide to cut our losses and move on down the road.
