  • lug Bug Ranch -- also known as Bug Ranch, Bug Farm, and Buggy Farm -- was created in 2002. The five wrecked Volkswagen Beetles, buried hood-down in the ground, were the idea of the Crutchfield family, who owned the Longhorn Trading Post and Rattlesnake Ranch next door. Slug Bug Ranch. It began when a huge corporate Travel Plaza was built on the opposite side of the Crutchfields interstate exit. They figured they could stay in business if they could siphon away traffic with something eye-catching and engaging. Slug Bug Ranch seemed a natural choice: a parody of the popular Cadillac Ranch, 35 miles west. At the time, the Beetle wrecks were painted a pristine bright yellow, and a sign next to them encouraged, "Sign a Bug." Slug Bug Ranch. The Crutchfield's were right about one thing: Slug Bug Ranch has proved popular as an attraction. Unfortunately, it flopped as a business plan, and the Trading Post closed only a year after it was built. Its advanced state of decay is a testament to the vigorous love it has endured from Route 66 travelers, who have felt free to modify the abandoned artwork with spray paint and whatever crowbars, hammers, blowtorches, etc. they apparently carry in their vehicles.

The owner or worker who checked me in was rude. There was a faucet leaking all night and a leak from the toilet on the floor. I guess that is what you get with a 2 star shady motel.

Annoying neighbors ruined our night

When we arrived, we were the only people at the motel. Our room was clean & in the corner of the motel. I thought it would be great, quiet and tucked away. Within the hour another car arrived & they put them in the room next to us. As they did with the next people to arrive at 10pm, who talked LOUDLY right outside our door and in their room next to us until 2 in the morning!! It was very annoying. I'm not sure why with the whole motel being empty they decided to put all customers in the same small area.

Stay in Clarendon or drive on to Amarillo

I don't know who is giving this motel such good reviews; perhaps friends & family because I definitely didn't experience an 8+ star review motel. Now mind you, I'm far from picky. I good with a clean, basic room. The room was clean (mostly). Could use a vacuum around the sides all around the perimeter. It is definitely the smallest room I've ever stayed in. The walls are paper thin. In addition to listening to traffic all night I had to listen to the conversations in the next room. Idk why they even got a room they never slept & ran in & out all night. Ugh!! The bed was only a small step up from sleeping on the floor. And the pillows weren't any better. The room was freezing! I thought that maybe it was a "magic fingers" bed but it turned out it was just me shivering and all night. The crack around the door didn't help, plus the draft around the old window which is about a foot from the bed. I finally put the heater on 83 but it only heats while it's running there's no insulation to keep it warm. It's January in the Texas Panhandle; it's cold. I'm a AAA member & picked this motel cuz it says AAA approved. I'll be phoning AAA to find out if that's even current & how they could recommend. I'm all for supporting local businesses and try to when possible but I do want a decent room. Nothing fancy, just comfortable. If perhaps the bed wasn't so hard, didn't squeak every time you moved, pillows thicker than 2", perhaps I'd be in a better mood for this review.

Run down, not very clean. No bathroom window and front window was sealed shut. A/C way too loud to have on all night. Stuffy, claustrophobic room. Grim location.
