The Olympic Mountains are a majestic background to this village where you can take leisurely strolls along the waterfront and join a whale watching excursion.

Nestled between two peninsulas on the western side of Orcas Island is the picturesque village of Deer Harbor. When Europeans first arrived on this part of the island, they found a community of Lummi Indians who spent their days fishing, hunting and collecting plants. Visit Deer Harbor to enjoy waterfront walks and views of the Olympic Mountains, sea kayaking tours and whale watching excursions.

The village is a great place to walk around and to breathe in the fresh island air. Relax on the beach or swim in the calm blue water. Stroll along the waterfront on Deer Harbor Road. On a good day you can enjoy views of the Olympic Mountains and Vancouver Island, Canada.

Go to the marina to schedule a sea kayaking tour around Jones Island State Park, where you can spot seals, bald eagles and otters, among other wildlife. Join a whale watching trip you might see orcas and humpback whales. April to October is the best time for whale spotting. Consider renting a boat to enjoy the picturesque landscapes of the San Juan Islands on a self-guided trip.

Visit the village in September for the Deer Harbor Wooden Boat Rendezvous. Varying styles of wooden boats, such as rowing boats, motorboats and tall ships, gather at the marina for a regatta and races. Many boats are also open for public viewing. Join the boat owners for a barbecue of fresh local and organic produce and to enjoy live music performances.

If you are feeling energetic, rent a bike from the marina and explore other areas of Orcas Island. Cycle along the scenic Crow Valley Road and stop to hike up Turtleback Mountain or visit Orcas Island Pottery, a pottery workshop set in an attractive garden.

Deer Harbor is a 20-minute drive from the Orcas Village ferry landing. A frequent ferry service travels between the landing and Anacortes, Washington State. Alternatively, you can fly from Anacortes and Seattle to the Orcas Island Airport, which is a 25-minute drive from the village.
