The name Khotin most likely comes from the word "want." This ancient fortress on important highways in a rich region, 20 km from Kamenetz-Podolsky, was a desirable object of many conquerors. One of the grandest battles of the late Middle Ages - the Khotyn War of 1621, in which the Ukrainian Cossacks and Polish troops inflicted a devastating defeat on the Turkish army, was a turning point in the history of Western Europe, marking the beginning of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
