"My only 4-star factor referred to the staff. The woman who checked me in was very pleasant and helpful. The only shock was when she told me to drop my key in the box outside in the morning, because nobody would be at the desk. Not "if" or "just in case." It is their policy to have nobody man the desk in the morning. Or maybe they are short of staff and couldn't have someone that day. But she sounded as if that's the normal case.
The room was clean and well-lit, to the point that I thought they were accommodating students who needed to do homework. The bathroom was clean and well appointed. The bed was comfortably firm.
I was able to park right outside the door, a feature I look for in a motel, though I did have to walk around a low (waist-high) concrete wall to get from my car to the room and back. I think it's a flood wall, with removable panels that let us walk through, but can be installed to protect the building in an emergency.
This was maybe the closest motel to home that I've stayed in I was just too tired to finish the drive. But yes, if I need to find a room in the Centralia area again, I'll try the Varsity Inn first."
