Head to the peaceful settlement of Eton Village to relax on the beautiful beach and lagoon.
Located on the east coast of Efate Island, Eton Village offers a glimpse of traditional island life. The village is famous for its residents who speak Eton, the local dialect of the South Efate language. Eton village is ideal for a daytrip, giving you time to swim in the ocean and visit the local school and church. Day tours depart from Port Vila – you can find out more on the official Port Vila tourism website. If you want to drive yourself, you can rent a car from one of the rental companies in Port Vila.
Eton’s biggest draw is the stunning Eton Beach. Small and sheltered, this serene white-sand beach is perfect for safe swimming and snorkelling, and the water is crystal clear. A picnic and barbeque area means you can bring your own food. Kids will love the nearby rope swing that drops you into the Blue Lagoon, a rainforest waterhole of both fresh and sea water. Note that if you bring your own car you will have to pay a small parking fee.
Visit the village to experience the traditional lifestyle of Vanautu residents, who live in wooden houses with no electricity. The families in the village grow produce to be sold at the markets at Port Vila. You can sample some of the home-grown products, including fresh papayas and coconuts. Check with your tour guide to see if the village school is open and you can pay a visit.
Eton Village can be easily reached by car, and is just a 45 minute drive from Port Vila. Drive past fields of coconut trees on the road that circles the island. Bear in mind that a four-wheel drive vehicle is desirable for accessing the beach.
