Fort McHenry

Fort McHenry featuring military items and a monument
A site of historical significance, plan a trip to the birthplace of the American National Anthem.

Fort McHenry played an integral part in the forming of America's national identity. During the War of 1812, it crucially defended Baltimore against the invading British. So important was its role that Francis Scott Key penned a poem that was to become the national anthem.

The 14th September, 1812 was the date of a significant battle between Britain and the United States. Despite 24 hours of heavy bombing, Fort McHenry didn't collapse and the British navy was defeated. The fort erected a new flag and that was the inspiration for Francis Scott Key’s "The Defence of Fort McHenry", which was set to music to become the country's national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner".

Begin your trip with a visit to the visitor centre where you can watch a short, patriotic film detailing the history of the fort. There are also numerous interactive displays which include weapons, uniforms, drawings and maps of the Battle of Baltimore, the Civil War and World War I.

Outside you can explore the barracks and officer's quarters in this beautifully preserved national treasure. The fortifications, bunkers, and giant cannons that are all surrounded by a deep moat make it easy to imagine the epic battle that took place there. There are lots of information points with wonderful facts and stories, such as the story of the gunpowder room that was hit with a bomb which extraordinarily didn't ignite. Another popular attraction at Fort McHenry is the changing of the flag ceremony with an imitation of the original flag with 15 stars and stripes. This large flag needs a lot of people to help fold it accurately.

The best way to access Fort McHenry is by water taxi as it is a beautifully picturesque setting. Located in Baltimore's Inner Harbour, the fort is also accessible by car should you wish to drive. It is open every day with longer opening hours during the summer months. You can choose to have a self-guided tour or to follow a volunteer. Entry is inexpensive and your ticket is valid for a week. Kids under 16 can enter for free.
