Gem in Ft Davis

Location was perfect & quiet. This seems to be 2 double-wide trailer houses that have been chopped into 3 or 4 "apartments". Since no one was booked in the one att'd to ours, the owner opened the door & we had access to a full kitchen & second bathroom. All the amenities you would have at home & a great fireplace (with wood provided). We thoroughly enjoyed this last minute booking. Just know that you'll need to prepare to cook at least some meals as there are not a lot of options open whenever you're hungry in Ft Davis - but with a fully stocked kitchen, this was easy.

Do not stay here!!

First of all, the hallway bathrooms toilet water was running all nite, small refrigerator had food and drinks in them and was not cold at all yuck!! , thermostat was controlled by other unit😳, king bed had a dip in the mattress, bed too soft, 2nd bathroom shower head squirted out all over, ran out of hot water… only enough hot water for 2 people and there were 5 of us- maintenance guy seemed pleasant.. it’s just an old place that needs major upkeep… ceiling fans were full of dust, Would not ever stay here again

Nice place for a family stay

Nice comfortable stay very close to downtown Ft. Davis. The full kitchen has everything you need, Check in and check out are very easy. Would stay again.

We love West Texas vacations, the open spaces, the sunset, local culture, history, scenic drives... everything. This is our 2nd stay at South Gate Lodges in Fort Davis Texas and we highly recommend South Gate Lodges, it comfortably sleeps 6 people and is a great place for a family reunion or family vacation. Clean, spacious, nice kitchen, simple and relaxed with no cumbersome rules and instructions to read and follow

Great place to stay

Property was well maintained, spacious great place for a group. Only complaint is the kitchenette only had a microwave so there was really no way to prepare a full meal, but that was only a minor inconvenience

When we drove up we saw it had a beautiful view of the mountain. It was peaceful and felt at home. Inside was clean and spacious. Later that day there was a wedding and they played loud music for hours. Played till 1:30 am. We arrived that day exhausted and wanted to rest but we couldn't with the loud music. Glad there was not another wedding the next day so we rested. I do recommend staying here. We enjoyed it.

It was very spacious double wide mobile home, but there was no kitchen. There was a mini fridge and a microwave, in addition to a coffee maker, but no kitchen. The biggest concern was that I had an overwhelming, pungent, stench of skunk in the home. Thank goodness we mostly just slept and showered there so we didn't spend much more time there.

The only thing to like is its proximity to Fort Davis. It has the potential to be a nice property, but the minute I walked into the place, I was hit in the face by a smell that can only be described as Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg having had a party there months before. It was a strong skunky smell that I've always associated with weed, but it could also have legitimately been a skunk. The thing is, the outside of the property didn't have that smell at all, so I can only assume that whatever caused the smell had embedded itself in the carpet, mattresses, beddings, furniture, and even the walls. It was so strong, it made my eyes water. We had prepaid for two nights. We went to the observatory the first night and had planned on visiting the Davis Mountains and then Marfa the next night, but because of the smell, we abandoned our plans and headed back a day early. I'm out $180 for the second night, but it just wasn't work staying in that stench. I called the management office the day we checked in and told them about it. They were going to have the property manager see what they could do. Having not heard back by the next morning, I called again and was told the property manager would be by that morning and to try opening windows to see if that would help. Problem is, the two back bedrooms have no screens on the windows, so opening them is a no-go. Finally, after a couple of hours I called them back to tell them we were leaving early. There's more, but out of space.

We had a very good stay. The house was comfortable and clean. The persons we talked to were friendly and helpful. We would suggest that the carpet needs attention. The area is beautiful. The MacDonald Observatory is a must see and the state park is great! We we’ll be back.

Nice amount of space and a full kitchen. Clean, comfortable, and the owner is very personable - responds quickly to communications. Great location for access to everything in the area where accomodations can be a challenge to find. Stargazing in the private parking area is great.

Great place to stay in small town of Fort Davis

The unit is actually an apartment sized unit with full size living room, bedroom, bath room and kitchen. The unit also featured a fireplace with free wood which was awesome due to cold weather in area. The unit was well kept. The location was less than 1/4 mile from main part of Fort Davis. The unit location was extremely quiet and surrounded by several acres of open land. Will book again.

Fort Davis

The room is like an apartment. Big living room with sofa, love seat TV, etc. and large bedroom suite with King Bed and a master bathroom with a separate tub, shower and 2 sinks. Very large. The carpet needs to be stretched. That is the only complaint. Ft. Davis is pretty remote but my wife and I enjoyed the rustic feel of a West Texas Town. We hiked at Ft Davis State Park and went to the McDonald Observatory. Fun.

Plenty of room for our group

Used this place for sleeping, showers, and microwave breakfast. Plenty of room for up to six adults. Living area is large and bedrooms are plenty, but beds are not the most comfortable. 2nd night of our stay included a (wedding party, not ours) live band/loud music until after midnight.

Very nice, clean, quiet environment. Well worth the stay. Easy to find and to check into the lodge. It was home away from home. Will recommend to others and will stay again.

We enjoyed our stay at South Gste Lodges! The unit was very clean and had a feeling of being at home. The only thing we didn’t like was we couldn’t control the temperature of the unit. The thermostat was in a nearby unit. So, we were cold the whole time even after closing the vents.

South Gate Lodge (Fort Davis)

Fort Davis is a sleepy little town that shuts down around 8 pm. South Gate Lodges are in an excellent location to the main part of town. Wifi was great and we were able to stream movies without a problem. We had the three bedrooms, two bath unit. The kitchenette contains a microwave and small frig. You will need to get ice as there is none available. The lodge was roomy and great for children. It is very reasonable and centrally located for McDonald Observatory, Marfa, horseback riding, etc. I will definitely use this place again.
